What is a TFN?
A Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique personal number issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). It’s used to identify you for tax and superannuation purposes while you’re working in Australia.
Your TFN ensures that the correct amount of tax is withheld from your wages and that your super contributions are properly recorded under your name.
Why do I need a TFN?
Having a TFN is essential if you’re earning money in Australia. Without one, your employer (including MyGig) is legally required to withhold tax at the highest rate, meaning you’ll take home less pay.
Providing your TFN helps:
- Make sure you’re taxed correctly
- Link your superannuation to your identity
- Avoid delays in your payments or tax refunds
For international workers
If you’re on a working holiday visa or another type of temporary visa, you still need a TFN to work legally in Australia.
