How to get a TFN?
A Tax File Number (TFN) is your unique identifier in Australia’s tax and superannuation system. Once issued, it stays with you for life even if you move or change jobs.
You’ll need a TFN if you want to:
- Work in Australia
- Lodge a tax return
- Apply for government benefits or student loans
- Operate a business (for certain structures)
Who Can Apply & Eligibility
- Australian residents for tax purposes (including citizens) can apply.
- If you hold a foreign passport, are a permanent migrant or temporary visitor, you can still apply—if you have work rights or are earning Australian-sourced income.
- It’s free to apply for a TFN.
How to Apply
Via the Australian Taxation Office website!
Which method you use depends on your identity documents, location, and circumstances:
1. Online Application (fastest for eligible applicants)
- If you're an Australian citizen aged 15 or older with an Australian passport, you can apply online using myGovID.
- The process involves verifying your identity documents, linking your myGovID to your myGov account, then submitting the TFN application.
- If successful, your TFN may be displayed immediately and you can download a summary.
2. Australia Post / In-Person Interview
- Complete the online form via the ATO website.
- Print the application summary.
- Visit a participating Australia Post outlet within 30 days with original proof of identity documents and the summary to complete the interview.
- After the interview, your TFN should be sent by mail within about 28 days.
3. Apply at a Services Australia Centre (in person, paper form)
- Use the paper form “Tax file number – application or enquiry for individuals (NAT 1432)” or a dedicated form for Indigenous applicants (if required).
- Provide original proof of identity documents in person.
4. By Post (paper application)
- If you can’t use other routes, complete the paper form (NAT 1432), attach certified copies of identity documents, and send to the address on the form.
- Don’t send original documents—they may not be returned.
Documents & Identity Requirements
You’ll need to supply documents to prove your identity. Acceptable proofs include passports, birth certificates, driver’s licence, Medicare card, citizenship certificate, etc.
If applying via post, documents must be certified copies by an authorised person (e.g. justice of the peace).
After You Apply
- Your TFN is usually sent via mail within 28 days of your completed application being accepted.
- If you do not receive it after 28 days, contact the ATO. (Australian Taxation Office)
- Once you have it, keep it safe! Don’t share it except with authorised entities (e.g. your employer, bank, ATO) to protect against misuse.
What to Do if You Already Have One or Lose It
- If you previously had a TFN but forgot it, you can retrieve it via ATO online services (through myGov) if linked.
- If your TFN is lost, stolen or misused, contact the ATO as soon as possible.
- You can also update your registration details (name, address, bank account, etc.) when needed.
