What should I know about health and safety during shifts?

At MyGig, your safety and well-being while on the job is our top priority. All workers are expected to follow safety guidelines, report hazards, and take responsibility for their own health at work. Here’s everything you need to know:

1. Understanding your workplace environment

Before starting any shift:

  • Check the shift description: It may include safety instructions, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) requirements, or other precautions.
  • Know the site hazards: Some workplaces, like construction or warehouses, have specific risks such as machinery, heights, or chemicals.
  • Follow signage and rules: On-site rules exist to keep everyone safe.

Arrive early and familiarize yourself with emergency exits, fire extinguishers, first aid stations, and supervisor contacts.

2. Personal protective equipment (PPE)

Certain shifts require PPE, which is often provided by the business or must be brought by you:

  • High-vis vests, steel-toed boots, or gloves for construction or logistics.
  • Masks, gloves, or protective clothing for food handling or cleaning.
  • Always wear the PPE correctly and follow instructions.

Not wearing required PPE can result in being sent home or marked on your timesheet.

3. Safe work practices

  • Lift and carry safely: Use correct posture and ask for help with heavy items.
  • Stay alert: Pay attention to your surroundings and any machinery or moving vehicles.
  • Report hazards immediately: Notify your supervisor or MyGig if you notice anything unsafe.
  • Follow instructions: Always listen to site supervisors and do not perform tasks you’re not trained for.

4. Breaks and fatigue management

  • Take scheduled breaks to rest, hydrate, and eat.
  • Avoid working when excessively tired. Fatigue increases the risk of accidents.
  • Inform your supervisor if you feel unwell or unsafe.

5. Reporting unsafe or unfair situations

Your safety is important. If you experience unsafe conditions, harassment, or unfair treatment:

  1. Report on the MyGig app using the “Report Issue” function.
  2. Include details: Shift date, location, issue description, and any witnesses if possible.
  3. Contact MyGig Support immediately if needed.

MyGig investigates all reports and works with businesses to ensure compliance with Australian health and safety laws.

6. Emergency procedures

  • Always know the location of exits, alarms, and first aid kits.
  • Follow site-specific emergency plans.
  • In case of a serious accident, notify supervisors and call emergency services immediately.

💡 Remember:

Following safety guidelines protects not just you, but also your coworkers and the businesses you work for. Being proactive about health and safety can also improve your reliability ratings and future booking opportunities.
